ucsd是以理工科为主偏重研究的大学,其在生物、化学、地球科学、环境科学等自然科学上有非常强的研究实力,大部分的ucsd的学生也都主修理科专业,因此学校的学习氛围浓郁、并且学生压力很大。同时很多教授对学术研究的兴趣超过本科教学。而非理科专业的学生在ucsd获得的机会和资源会少很多。所在的san diego市有很多跟ucsd专业对口的企业,学生有很多实习机会，很强的理科和工科专业,同时人文专业也很齐备。
ucsd所处的周边环境很适合生活、有大量的社交活动的机会,但大多ucsd的理科生占主导地位,大部分学生几乎只关注于自身的学习和研究,无暇去享受课余生活。
要求sat i和sat ii,竞争激烈,同时uc本州学生优先、美国本土学生其次、国际学生最后考虑的政策也使得ucsd的申请难度加大，
费用较贵,且不对国际学生提供任何形式的经济资助。

ucsd是一所理科超强的研究型大学,同时有出色的本科工科专业,但其他科目明显偏弱,学校的学术氛围浓郁、单也因此校园生活很单调、学习压力较大,适合喜欢钻研纯科学和做研究的学生。ucsd的申请要求高、难度较大,同时费用昂贵且不对国际学生提供经济资助。
